When Bentley was diagnosed with a terminal cancer, we were devastated (to say the least). For me it was like losing a son and a best friend in one. This time it was my rock dying. He helped me through my moms death, who was going to help me through his? Our hearts were broken. How were we going to deal with this pain. To me it was almost as bad as losing my mom. He was a family member. We had no idea how to deal with all these emotions and decisions had to be made what were we to do. Unfortunately there was nothing we could do to save him and we lost Bentley in August of “09″. One of the worst days of our lives. And at the same time we were also dealing with the illnesses of our other boy Lex. He had a type of doggie dementia among other health issues. We lost Lex in January “2010″.
We tried to find some counseling, or a group or someone who could guide us through this emotional rollercoaster. All we could find was one councilor at the University of Florida four hours away from us. We did get a grief councilor from hospice to talk to about just grief in general. We thought at that time with all these millions of people who have pets in the world how could there not be this type of help out there. That’s when we decided to start Bentley’s House (a pet lose support group for any type of pet loss). We wanted to honor our boys and at the same time help others who have gone through or are going through the loss of a pet.
